Getting Licensed

Background on Licenses

There are three classes of Amateur Radio licenses granted by the FCC: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. Everyone starts as a Technician licensee, and then can upgrade their license to get more operating privileges in other bands and modes. You no longer need to know morse code as the FCC dropped the requirements for all classes in 2007.

For our prospective members and the general public, the technician exam consists of 35 multiple choice questions selected randomly from a larger pool of questions that cover rules and regulations, operating procedures, and basic theory.
